What inspires you when it comes to interior design?

The maximalist movement is the inspiration behind many of my design choices - “Maximalism - the opposite of minimalism!”

Although maximalism lacks a clear definition, its core elements are plentiful: pattern, colour, and texture. The key to maximalism is that there are no rules - it celebrates the freedom of self-expression, abundance and the joy of a colourful, pattern-filled interior.

I see every room as an opportunity to unleash its own personality, right through to kitchens, mud rooms, and outdoor entertainment areas.

Beautiful, comfortable rooms with playful, well-thought-out details draw your attention to the present moment and provide a stimulating backdrop to your daily life.

I enjoy experimenting with the tension between classical and unexpected design that is also firmly rooted in practicality and purpose.

I believe that a home should reflect the lives of its inhabitants as well as the objects and ideas that inspire them.

INSPO - FASHION - Cue

Cue to me is distinguished by creative design and masculine shapes that are juxtaposed with feminine details and luxurious textures that have been reimagined with a maximalist approach to fashion.

Cue's uses strong colours, luxurious fabrication, and statement silhouettes exudes effortless cool and is infinitely adaptable, which is exactly how I envision the interior spaces I've been given the pleasure of working on.

INSPO - DESIGN - Architectural Digest Magazine

www.architecturaldigest.com

Architectural Digest is a vibrant monthly celebration of international design talents, innovative homes and products, inspiring decorating ideas, culture, and travel.

I love the abundance of resources this magazine delivers.

INSPO - The 70’S

I love how textured fabrics, geometric shapes and patterns, and multi-use/free-flowing spaces like sunken living rooms, room dividers, and upholstered seating are becoming more popular. Paired with earthy colour schemes inspired by retro style and emerging from the past in new ways.

Bringing nature indoors, materials such as velvet and rattan, and patterned wallpaper - just adds excitement and interest - Maximalism!

What do you love most about working with clients to achieve a desired look?

I look at it as a meeting of minds. A client has made the decision to approach us as interior stylists as they either have a clear idea of what style they want, but need assistance in execution or the client just doesn’t know where to start and has become overwhelmed with the research they have done.

I love building rapport and filtering out what exactly is the right path and together we build a theme for their new home or renovation.

Such a satisfying experience when you know you have over delivered on the client’s expectations.

What lies ahead for Sophie Chambers of Chambers Design?

Excitement! My carpenter partner and I have recently renovated and sold our home and have brought another home to renovate. Living in a house while you renovate was definitely a learning curve for me, I experienced how much work there is in renovating. This process allowed me to develop my own interpretation of design as well as my own flair.

I am fizzing for the next chapter to try new styles, products and further my skills with this renovation. I see many projects similar to this one in my future, along with building the brand of Chambers Design.

Business Owner / Interior Designer.

Karen Chambers

Karen Chambers' approach to interior design is pure and simple. - not just her aesthics but the way she was introduced to the industry.

Having observed her mother producing curtains and crafting made-to-measure apparel while working from home. From a young age, Karen was completely immersed with textures and fashion.

At school, it was no surprise that Karen was remarkably good at design, clothing and textiles. This was a path she was to follow and make a career of

When and why did you become interested in interior design?

Growing up I had a passion for all things creative. I believe my love for fabrics began at an early age when I used to watch my mother making fine fashion for women as well as sewing curtains for her clients both near and far.

After meeting my husband, we set out on our married life renovating homes, which also included a 100 year old character home. On this journey we discovered we were both passionate about building and renovating, and it wasn’t before long we had renovated and built over half a dozen homes.

The fact that we get along so well as a team and that Glenn was an electrician really helped with any house renovation and new builds.

What inspires you when it comes to interior design?

I draw my inspiration from the creatives who have changed the world via fashion, textiles, and interior design. changed our perception of our surroundings while pursuing excellence in design and quality.

Inspo: Fashion - Karen Walker

I adore the vitality and optimism that, in my opinion, define the Karen Walker brand.

She skilfully contrasts opulent with casual, masculine and feminine, folk and practical, and other cultural subtexts to create looks that are both stylish and wearable.

Textiles; Catherine Martin - Mokum

Catherine Martin is an award winning expert at bringing worlds to life on screen. She’s done just that as the costume, production and set designer for every one of Baz Luhrmann’s films, including Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge! and more recently, Elvis.

I appreciate how her collections are mostly pattern driven and embrace a very theatrical colour palette, giving diversity to the Mokum brand's product offering. The exciting partnership between Mokum and Catherin Martin offers a selection of exquisite fabric and wallpaper collections.

Abigail Adern - one of the world most exciting designers

Whether she is introducing artificial flowers or deep, inky colour schemes, Abigail is a tastemaker who is ahead of the design curve.

Her avant-garde designs are linked to glamour, eclecticism, and British wit. Her portfolio includes anything from opulent homes to the Ritz Carlton Palm Beach hotel.

What do you love most about working with clients to achieve a desired look?

I adore having the ability to design something special and personalised. The aspect of hunting and gathering solutions for any design project is what really appeals to me. Creating homes that our clients appreciate by working closely with local architects and tradespeople is such a fulfilling experience.

The one-on-one conversations I have with clients are something I really like. Design entails explicit trust and responsibility, and I see every project as an “Idea” partnership. Each person has unique likes and opinions, and I find that exciting.

What lies ahead for Karen Chambers of Chambers Design?

Setting new standards for excellent design in all aspects of our lives, including stunning outside areas like patios, verandas, decks, and conservatories, is the next step for Chambers Design.

New Zealanders have long loved outdoor living, and I want to show home owners how enjoyable these outside spaces can be with the proper decor, hard and soft furnishings, and other accessories.

Soon, these areas will rival our favourite "rooms" inside the house!

Teamwork makes the Dreamwork.

The vision for Chambers Design is to keep growing the team. It gives me tremendous satisfaction to witness a new team member work there way into their dream job at Chambers Design. This could be a home stylist, colour consultant, interior designer through to project management.

The possibilities are endless at Chambers Design where no two days are ever the same!
